State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Partnering with California PTA

to Provide Common Core Resources to Parents

“This is a crucial time for public education,” said California State PTA President Colleen A.R. You. “The new Common Core standards will help us prepare all students for college and careers, and help them develop vital critical thinking and deeper learning skills. We’re delighted to have Superintendent Torlakson’s support in sharing information as widely as possible with parents about what the new standards will mean for their children and schools.”

Originally developed by the National PTA, each guide includes:

  • An overview of some of the key items students will learn in the Common Core State Standards for English-language arts and mathematics.
  • Ideas for activities that enable parents to support learning at home.
  • Topics of discussion for talking with teachers about student academic progress.

These state-developed standards, which California and 45 other states have voluntarily adopted over the past few years, are designed to provide all students with the deeper learning, critical thinking, and other skills they need to prepare for college and a career. They describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.

The guides are available in English and Spanish on the California State PTA site.

Dear Carquinez Middle School Parent, Families, Staff and Students,

It is with heartfelt words that I write this letter to inform you that as of June 30th, 2014  will be leaving the position as Principal of Carquinez Middle School/District Common Core Coordinator and embark on my next step in my professional career. On July 22nd, I will start a new job as an Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning for the San Leandro Unified School District. This is an exciting time for me and for my family and I look forward to growing professionally.

I have had the distinct pleasure of serving the students of John Swett Unified School district since August 2000 and will miss this unique and special district immensely.  This school year we worked together for the benefit of our students and I proudly watched 120 eighth graders being promoted on June 12th.  There are many exciting opportunities that lie ahead for Carquinez Middle School.  The Local Control Accountability Plan is currently underway which will provide additional resources to out schools.  Also, a bond measure is being placed on the November ballot to build or rebuild CMS into a 21st century middle school to ensure our students are ready to compete in the global economy.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to all the CMS staff, students and families for making my time here a rewarding and memorable experience.  I promise you will be left in good hands as the district will be interviewing highly qualified applicants starting on June 20th.

                                                    School begins Tuesday, August 26th

6th grade parent orientation will be Tuesday, August 19th at 10:00 a.m.

Thank you for a wonderful experience and I bid you all a fond farewell.

Sincerely,

Joanne Clark
